SERVICE TO COMMUNITY:

My service to the public has had two foci. One focus has been to bring medical information about the Gynecologic cancers to the public in a way that is accessible and useful, with the ultimate goal of reducing risk for cancer and making early diagnosis possible. I have given over 500 lectures to women’s groups, senior women’s groups, retirement homes, high schools, YWCA’s, book stores, and employment associations since 1990.

The other focus has been on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) health issues. In 1992, I initiated and lead the Benefit Parity Bill Initiative at Stanford University, which made Stanford the first university in the world to offer an exactly equal benefit package to all employees, regardless of orientation. I have been very involved in the translation and interpretation of and education about the experiences and lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gendered individuals to the medical community, as well as the general public. This activity has included many meetings in the early 1990’s with Dr. Donna Shalala as Director of Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. David Satcher as Director of the CDC and others in the National Institutes of Health which have resulted in, among other things, the inclusion of questions about orientation and behavior in federal research instruments so that a demographic profile of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gendered community members might be generated. Today this information is now widely published and is used to improve the health of LGBT’s. Later in the 1990’s, my focus was to disseminate information about the health issues pertinent to these populations in Grand Rounds, peer reviewed publications and reports. I give Grand Rounds lectures to universities, hospitals, medical specialty groups, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and others about LGBT health challenges. To further generate quality research information on LGBT health, I founded the Lesbian Health Fund, which has collected and granted over $575,000 in small grants to over 50 projects, resulting in over 45 peer-reviewed publications since its inception.

Cancer Section Leader, Scientific Workshop on Lesbian Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, DC, March 23-24, 2000.

Keynote Address, Mayor's Summit on Lesbian Health, Making our personal commitment to health a political commitment, San Francisco, CA April 7, 2000.

TEACHING:
I have been active in the education of student physicians and other physicians since 1986. Currently I give Grand Rounds in many hospitals and universities, teaching about laparoscopic hysterectomy techniques, and how homophobia is a health hazard. I taught total laparoscopic hysterectomy techniques at three international meetings of the Society for Gynecologic Oncologists, and produced the successful conference jointly sponsored by ACOG on Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Advanced Pelvic Support Procedures in June, 2006, with another one scheduled for July 27-8, 2007.

We are planning another large conference for teaching laparoscopic surgeons this July, 2007.
RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY:
Current research activity is focused on laparoscopic hysterectomy and staging techniques with frequently published retrospective reviews of data, also presented nationally and locally. Creative activity within my profession focuses on teaching total laparoscopic hysterectomy and on multiple grand rounds dissemination of the health information needed by clinicians to provide culturally competent health care to the sexual minority patient.
